It may be art but it ain’t economic development
During Tuesday’s City Council workshop the ODC brought forward a proposal for approval to use $600,000 of economic development funds to renovate the Ellen Noel Art Museum.
While most agree that the Ellen Noel Museum is a great part of the Odessa landscape, using tax dollars to support this private non-profit seems a poor use of taxpayer money. Although the ODC can shoehorn this give-away into the ODC legal framework they are hard-pressed to explain how the museum will grow the tax base, diversify the economy or help build a skilled workshop. This grant will be voted on at next Tuesday’s City Council meeting and it is imperative that taxpayers let the city council members know that spending tax dollars on art projects is not ok. You wanted change and you got it when you elected a new city council. Please take a few minutes out of your day to remind YOUR city council that YOU will hold them accountable.
